Celebrate Scotland’s national day with a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson read by Scottish Makar Dr Peter Mackay
‘Makar’ is the Scots word for the author of a literary work, and particularly for a poet or bard. The position of Scots Makar – the National Poet for Scotland – was created in February 2004 by the Scottish Government and supported by Creative Scotland. During their three-year tenure, the Makar is tasked to champion poetry across Scotland.
Dr Peter Mackay, a Senior Lecturer at the University of St Andrews, has been named Scotland’s Makar – the National Poet for Scotland in 2024. The announcement was made at Bute House by First Minister John Swinney. Dr Mackay’s appointment marks a historic milestone as he becomes the first Makar to primarily write in Gaelic.
